Â鶹´«Ã½ University’s The Panther serves both as a student newspaper and a laboratory publication of the mass communications department.
Orangeburg Massacre
In 2018, a special edition of the print Panther marked the 50th anniversary of the Orangeburg Massacre, the 1968 killing of three students and wounding of 28 others during a protest aimed at desegregating an Orangeburg bowling alley. The Panther interviewed students on topics from how much they know about the incident to the state of race relations in 2018. Special reporting focused on the assessment of Bakari Sellers, CNN analyst and son of Dr. Cleveland Sellers, the only man jailed in connection with the Orangeburg Massacre, and Cecil Williams, noted Orangeburg civil rights photographer and author. Williams’ books include extensive photography from 1968 in Orangeburg.
The Panther online then featured coverage of events surrounding the Orangeburg Massacre commemoration in February, plus a special report from a session with Â鶹´«Ã½ President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale on the years leading to the tragedy. Tisdale was a Â鶹´«Ã½ student and a protester in his own right during the 1960s in Orangeburg.

Link with Orangeburg daily newspaper
The Panther has solid ties with The Times and Democrat, Orangeburg’s daily newspaper. Panther contributions appear on the newspaper’s pages and at its website with frequency, expanding students’ experiences from collegiate to professional media.
Special year for editor
In 2018, Panther Editor Bradley Harris was named the S.C. Press Association’s Collegiate Journalist of the Year for colleges and universities with under 5,000 enrollment. Harris, who most recently has joined The Times and Democrat’s staff as a reporter, is the third Panther editor in four years to win the award, an unprecedented accomplishment.
