The Republican Party will win the U.S. House of Representatives and the Democratic Party will have control of the Senate, attorney and CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers said during a news conference with The Panther on Nov. 3.
Sellers said his prediction is based on history and that whenever one party is in the White House, the opposite party wins the House in midterm elections.
Sellers, who at age 21 in 2006 became the youngest ever member of the S.C. House when elected from Bamberg County, also addressed South Carolina races on Election Day, Nov. 8.
He sang praises of former Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham for his journey in the governor’s race.
“I think Joe Cunningham is the best candidate we’ve had run for governor in a long time,” Sellers said. The S.C. Democratic Party could have done more in supporting his candidacy.
“If Joe Cunningham loses, it will be at no fault of his own,” Sellers said.
Sellers believes superintendent of education will be the closest race in South Carolina.
A key race for the U.S. Senate is in Georgia, Sellers said. The outcome could decide the Senate majority.
“Herschel Walker vs. Raphael Warnock is the most watched race in the country,” said Sellers, who supports Warnock.
Sellers said Democrats do not need to run from the issue of inflation.
“Inflation does not happen in a vacuum; the country overheated because of COVID,” Sellers said.
Abortion is an important issue in the midterms after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade and returned abortion to the states as a legal issue. But he said grouping the issue into “pro-life” or “pro-choice” does not do justice to the complexities of people’s positions.
Sellers believes it is important that the U.S. combat illegal immigration.
The path to citizenship should be improved, and the border needs to be safe and secure, he said. Companies should be sanctioned and punished for hiring illegal immigrants.
“That in itself undercuts our immigration policy and our economy,” Sellers said.
Sellers said pouring resources into communities would be a good way to combat crime.
Fox News typically covers cities and states controlled by Democrats as the areas with the most crime. Sellers argues that the highest crime rates are in states such as Georgia, South Carolina and Mississippi, where Republicans hold power.
Although issues are important, Sellers said political differences should not cause hate.
“Just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean they are evil,” Sellers said.
